The Kangaroo gold coin series was introduced in 1986 under the name “Australian Nugget.” At that time, the coins featured famous gold nuggets as a tribute to the Australian gold rush. However, since the expected success did not materialize, the mint decided to introduce a new design in 1990. Since then, the kangaroo, Australia’s national animal, has appeared on the obverse of the coin.
